Joachim Andersen Receives Abuse and Death Threats
Crystal Palace defender Joachim Andersen has reportedly received between 300 to 400 Instagram messages – which include abuse and death threats – over the last two days.
The messages, which appear to be in response to his club’s match against Liverpool that ended in a 1-1 draw on Monday, 15 August, have been reported to the police.
During the match, Andersen was seen shoving Liverpool striker, Darwin Nunez, who responded by head-butting him. Nunez received a red card at the and currently faces a three-match ban.
As Andersen shared screenshots of the messages, he said: “I understand you support a team but have some respect and stop acting tough online.
“I hope Instagram and the Premier League do something about this,” the 26-year-old Danish international added.
While Palace have offered emotional support to the player, Meta (owner of Instagram and Facebook) took a more direct approach.
In a statement made to an international news outlet, a representative for the corporation said: “We have strict rules against bullying and harassment, and we are in direct contact with Joachim’s team on the issue.”
They added: “No one thing will fix this challenge overnight, but we’re continuing our work with the industry and Government [sic] to help keep our community safe from abuse.”
